Locate a Broken Neutral
To ground 120 volts at a device (light, outlet, etc.), but not to the neutral, try this before calling in a professional. Purchase a voltage detector and touch it to the house wiring, which supplies power to the device. One side of the wire should send a signal, but not both sides. If both sides send a signal, run your indicator along the neutral side until the second signal stops. Once the signal stops, you have found the area where the connection is loose. Turn off the power, repair the connection and turn on the power, and your wife will think that you are a genius.
